The Importance Of Putting Yourself First

The Importance Of Putting Yourself First

You’ve got a lot on your plate; at times, life can feel like a balancing act. How do you keep your priorities straight? To name a few, there’s your family, your friends, and your career.

But when’s the last time that you prioritized yourself?

Balancing all of these things can get a bit hectic at times. Many of us have a deeply ingrained notion that putting ourselves first is selfish. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

You’re the captain of your ship. If you aren’t there to steer it, you might get lost at sea. How can you help others navigate their lives if you don’t spend time getting to know yourself?

Here’s why you should consider putting yourself first:

Recognizing Your Needs

A common misconception about self-care is that it only involves “fun” activities—things like taking a spa day, treating yourself to a tasty meal, or taking a hot bath.

But sometimes, the things you need aren’t that enjoyable to do. And that doesn’t make them any less important.

Take, for example:

  • The health concern you’ve been meaning to ask your doctor about.
  • The paperwork you want to catch up on.
  • Repainting your bedroom.
  • Getting rid of junk.

None of these things are the definition of “fun”, but they’re all tasks that address your needs. And with all of these tasks, one thing stays the same: you’ll feel better once they’re done.

Once you recognize what you need to facilitate self-growth and reduce your stress, the next step is setting aside the time for it.

Ways To Set Boundaries

Think back to when you were a child, and it was easy to say no. Someone would tell you to eat your vegetables or do your homework, and you’d respond with a defiant “Nope!”

But many adults have a much harder time with this word. We might overfill our plate with responsibilities and plans to keep those around us happy. And in doing that, we lose sight of ourselves.

For example, what should you do if a friend invites you out for coffee, but you already planned to have some me-time that night? You want to turn them down without hurting their feelings.

Try out these phrases when you want to politely turn down an invitation or request:

  • That sounds great, but I just don’t have the time right now! Maybe next week.
  • I’d love to, but unfortunately, I have other plans already. How about another day?
  • I’m sorry, but I can’t help you out right now. I’ve got too much on my plate. If there is any other way I can support you, please let me know.

Sometimes, putting yourself first might feel a little selfish. But when your own needs are neglected, it’s that much harder to give to others. Remember that it’s impossible to be there for everyone else all the time.
