Three Ways To Avoid Cabin Fever During Self-Isolation

Three Ways To Avoid Cabin Fever During Self-Isolation

In this period of COVID-19, where we are all expected to self-quarantine and social-distance, are you beginning to feel restless? Are you beginning to feel unmotivated and unable to do anything? Is staying indoors driving you crazy and causing you to become cranky for no good reason? You’re most likely suffering from cabin fever.

Cabin fever is a term often used to refer to the reaction of being isolated and disconnected from the outer world. In this period of self-isolation, here are four ways to avoid cabin fever:

Maintain a Social Life

Social gatherings have been banned, your favourite meet-up joint is closed temporarily and everything seems to have come to a sudden stop. While it may not be possible to go out for dinner with your friends, you could still catch up with them via media channels. Real-time video streaming services like Skype, FaceTime, and Zoom can help you keep in touch. We are by no means saying that connecting with your buddies virtually can replace physical connections, but connecting virtually in this period can help you feel connected to the outer world. If you’re grappling with a situation, a simple video call can help you feel better and prevent you from going into full-blown cabin fever.

Exercise

Exercise promotes a release of endorphins from the brain - powerful chemicals that boost your mood and make you more relaxed. As you exercise, certain positive changes occur, like reduced inflammation and neural growth. These changes, in addition, contribute to feelings of calmness and well-being. As a great form of distraction, exercise also helps you break any cycle of negative thoughts that could eventually lead to depression. So, even if you have to stay indoors, finding a way to stay physically active will help keep cabin fever at bay. Here are some great indoor exercises to try out.

Maintain Normal Eating Patterns

Anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating are some of the eating disorders people who are self-isolating may experience. What are the reasons for this? Because isolation breeds feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression for some, binge-eating and restricting can serve as ways to soothe these feelings and make us feel like we have a semblance of control over our situations. As the eating disorder slowly creeps in, you may feel some short term relief but this is always at the expense of both your physical and mental health. To maintain high energy levels, you need to maintain a healthy diet and eating patterns. During this time, limit high-sugar, fatty foods, and instead, drink plenty of water.

Learn a New Skill

In this crisis lies an opportunity. What you do have is the luxury of time. Instead of sulking on your couch, how about you learn a new skill? At the click of a button, you can find a tutorial on whatever interests you. Whether it’s baking, sewing or dancing, the digital world has made it easier than ever before to acquire skills. Keeping your mind occupied will not just keep cabin fever away but also will give you a positive edge when the crisis is finally over.
