Staying Present With A Wandering Mind

You know how people say, “Life moves pretty fast?” Well, with a wandering mind, it can certainly feel that way. People spend most of their waking lives thinking about one thing from the next to the next. It’s not always easy to press pause and take a minute to live in the now.

Start Breathing

It’s almost become a cliché, but when someone tells you to breathe when your mind is worked up, it does help. Breathing techniques have been used by many people for millennia. Why not give them a try?

Your thoughts can move a mile a minute. Thinking about all the things that stress you out, whether it be bills, grades, relationships, work, and so on, can get in the way of what you’re doing now. Taking a break and concentrating on breathing can calm your nervous system and allow you to bask in the present.

Try Meditation

Meditating provides many neurological, psychological, and physical benefits. However, meditation isn’t easy, especially for those with wandering minds. It takes a lot of practice to gain the focus and concentration needed for meditation, but it can be done.

Sitting and focusing your mind can help with mindfulness training. But what is that? Mindfulness training can help slow down those wandering thoughts to a point where you can enjoy experiencing your life as the clock ticks. Give it a try. It may not work the first time, but keep trying. Eventually, you might be able to filter through thoughts without any trouble.  

Keep Active

Stay active and be physical. That may mean different things for various individuals, but the idea is to do something that links your thoughts with the task at hand.

What To Do?

So, what does that entail? It could be anything from working out at the gym, going for a run, and taking a walk around nature to cleaning your home, showering, and playing fetch with your dog. The options are endless. Exercise often produces excellent mental health benefits, and you can do virtually anything to keep your mind focused on the activity you’re performing.

Stimulate Your Mind

Your brain needs a break sometimes. Some of the best ways to do that are by stimulating your mind. Think of it in the same vein as keeping active. When you give your brain something to do, you’re almost tricking it into focusing on what’s right in front of you. That’s the key to staying present.

Mental Exercises

You can keep your mind stimulated with a variety of mental exercises, such as:

  • Reading
  • Puzzles
  • Games
  • Singing
  • Playing instruments
  • Cinema
  • Art
  • Writing

Those are all ways to keep your mind set on the tangible things in your hands or right in front of you. You can practice these exercises at your own leisure and notice a difference in the rate at which your mind slips away.
